Capital since 1852, when it was no more than a village, Managua now has 2 million inhabitants installed south of Lake Xolotlan.

Virtually no homes or buildings are old. The city was trimmed in 1931 and 1972 for violent earthquakes.

At the site of the historic center, destroyed, empty lots are around some buildings left standing and interested in architecture and history lovers:

  1. The old cathedral facade cracked and the walls have beautiful bas-reliefs; its two bell towers are riddled with bullet holes dating from the civil war, a glass roof replacing the roof collapsed in the telluric vibrations.
  2. The National Palace of Culture, built in 1941.
  3. The new cathedral, modern architecture, stunning.
